West End earned its name because it was originally the westernmost part of Washington D.C. according to the original Pierre L’Enfant plan for the city. This was before the annexation of Georgetown, so although it’s no longer the “west end” of D.C., it retains the name.

The West End is one of Washington D.C.’s more affluent communities, where luxury condos, fine restaurants, and new developments are the norm. It’s also home to the embassies of Qatar and Spain.

The West End neighborhood is a diverse community where young professionals, families, and seniors all like to call home. It boasts a highly-educated population with an incredible 94 percent having earned a bachelor’s degree or higher.

It’s especially loved by Millennials as they make up the largest section of the population, nearly 30 percent. It’s a neighborhood where the women outnumber the men by two percent and the median household income is $79,296. This number can be misleading, however, as 29 percent of the working adults here earn at least $150,000.

Public transportation is well-represented in the West End with the community being served by the Blue and Orange Metrorail lines and 11 bus routes. It’s also extremely walkable, earning a walk score of 95 from WalkScore.com. This places it among the top six most walkable neighborhoods in the District of Columbia.

So, the combination of public transit options and the fact that most errands can be completed on foot or bicycle means that owning a car isn’t a requirement to live here, however most residents still choose to commute by car. The Zipcar car-sharing service is also available in the West End for those who don’t want to own a car but could use one from time to time.

Rock Creek runs along the west edge of West End, and along with it comes a lot of open green spaces and fields. This provides the residents of West End ample opportunities for enjoying a broad array of outdoor activities. The northern border of the neighborhood offers even more green spaces with Francis Steven Field and Playground, which also contains a soccer field and tennis courts, and P Street Beach.

Along with plenty of outdoor activities, the West End also offers a lot of ways for its residents to get and stay in shape. Residents can take part in SoulCycle and solidcore Pilates. There’s also Urban Boxing and CrossFit Foggy Bottom at Balance Gym where you can fine tune your body.

Living in the West End makes it easy for you to enjoy some of the best restaurants in the D.C. area. For upscale Italian food and an excellent wine list, visit Ristorante La Perla of Washington on Pennsylvania Avenue. Closer to the Embassy of Spain, you’ll find Marcel’s by Chef Robert Wiedmaier. Here, you can enjoy contemporary French/Belgian food in a most elegant setting.

Closer to the center of the neighborhood is the three-time Michelin Star-winning Blue Duck Tavern, which specializes in finely prepared American cuisine using locally sourced ingredients. Or, if you want to eat in a trendy, New American restaurant that was built around a large indoor tree, then Firefly is where you’ll want to be.

After dinner, you can catch a comedian and enjoy some drinks at the DC Comedy Loft and Bier Baron Tavern, just north of the neighborhood. Or, you can unwind with a cup of joe at the neighborhood fixture, Soho Tea & Coffee or at the Australian-style coffeehouse, Bluestone Lane.

The area around West End is a shopper’s delight. The Shops at the Columbia offer plenty of groceries and spirits, and there’s a Trader Joe’s just around the corner. Second Story Books is D.C.s longtime resource for used and rare books and the independent comic store, Fantom Comics is right next door.

West of the West End along Pennsylvania Avenue there’s a nice selection of premium clothing stores, like Hu’s Wear, Ike Behar, Suitsupply, Niccolo, as well as a few antiques stores and another popular book store, Bridge Street Books.

West End Neighborhood 8Pet-Friendly West End

With the large Rock Creek park running alongside the West End and its high walkability score, the neighborhood is a great place to own a dog. There’s even a dog park in the neighborhood near Francis Field. Many of the rentals in this part of D.C. are accommodating to pets, but they may have certain restrictions regarding the size of dogs they allow and breeds.

You also need to comply with Washington D.C.’s dog laws which include always leashing your dog, always picking up after your dog, and ensuring their shots are always up to date.
